An Amazing Eggs-periment
Materials Needed:
Peeled, hard-boiled egg
Glass returnable milk bottle
Bowl of cold water
Hot tap water
Dish gloves
This was a lot of fun and we tried it two ways: #1 with using just the hot tap water and #2 with using a flame at the bottom of the jar. Both worked and both were fun. The video here is my son using the flame, well…because he likes to play with fire.
First when doing this video, try having your kids push the hard boiled egg down the neck of the milk jar without breaking it. Give up? Now place the egg in a bowl of cold water. Meanwhile, place the milk bottle under hot top water for a minute or so, letting it fill. Then, wearing dish gloves to protect your hands, empty the water down the drain (a parents, job). Quickly place the egg, tapered end down, on the mouth of the bottle and watch carefully. The egg slowly gets sucked into the bottle with a satisfying thunk. That’s because the hot air inside the bottle is less dense and thus lower pressure than the cooler outside air. The difference creates a suction that pulls the squishy egg through the bottle neck.
