As a un-schooling mom of many chldren, I do get asked this question all the time. “How will your children ever learn math?”
Well…in living! No, they are not sitting at the table doing a math text book daily, but that doesn’t mean they are not doing any math. I think the misconception with un-schooling is that if children are allowed the freedoms to seek out their own interests that math will not be one of them. But you know what I have learned? Is that they will! And as homeschooling parents, it is our responsibility to be available, introduce, and be creative in introducing them to various learning opportunities in this world. And learning opportunities are all over the place. Opening checking accounts, having them do some grocery shopping and keeping within a budget, giving them money to spend and teach them saving and spending. The list goes on and on. And as an un-schooling family, there isn’t any “turn-off” button. There are questions to be answered and learning opportunities so often that you almost need to get mommy breaks every so often to refuel your self.
How do your homeschoolers learn by living? What math learning opportunities have you used? I know a lot of homeschooling families that even though they may not totally un-school their children, find learning through experience is a wonderful way to learn and apply it along side their curriculum.
